BIO:
The Republic of Wolves convened in July 2009 from a host of studio and solo projects its members had been immersed in. Guitarist/vocalist Gregg Andrew DellaRocca was recording indie-folk duo Tigers on Trains--comprised of vocalist/guitarist Mason Maggio and guitarist/vocalist Christian Van Deurs--when the trio decided to join forces with keyboardist/vocalist Billy Duprey to form a new collaborative studio project. Drummer Chris Wall was recruited to fill out the lineup and the eastern Long Island band consequently cut a handful of demos.
Internet buzz spread--especially on alternative music webzine Absolutepunk.net--when an acquaintance of the band leaked murky-sounding clips of the demos onto YouTube (without the band's prior knowledge or approval) disguised as snippets from the then-upcoming and much-hyped full-length by fellow Long Islanders Brand New. By the time the real band's identity was revealed, a small cult following had already developed for the previously anonymous act. The Republic of Wolves' MySpace page would receive more than 17,000 hits in the three days after disclosure.
Soon thereafter the band completed work on its more polished debut EP, His Old Branches, releasing it that following December to critical acclaim from a number of webzines and blogs. When the band played their first show in May 2010, they had already followed Branches with a 7-inch single for the song "Cardinals" and been courted by several high-profile record labels both major and independent.
Despite the attention, the band opted to self-fund and record their first proper full-length, Varuna, which they self-released that November. Wasting little time, they promised a followup EP for January 2011 that would consist of songs from the same session and be dubbed The Cartographer.
